Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the difference between dial-up and broadband Internet access?

The two biggest differences are the speed of your connection and the fact that with broadband you are always connected. The faster connection will allow you to do things online that you couldn’t do with dial-up such as listen to streaming audio and view streaming video. Because you are always connected, you won’t have to dial a phone number to get to the Internet.

Will I need a phone line for Winters Broadband Internet service?

No. Because you are using wireless broadband, you don’t need a phone line or modem to get to the Internet. You don’t need to buy a second phone line or use the one you use for phone calls. You can be on the internet and on the phone at the same time.

Do I need to provide special computer accessories or software?

You don’t need special software, but you need to have an Ethernet card in your computer. Most new computers have them. If for some reason you don’t have one, they are relatively inexpensive to buy (approx $25 - $35), easy to find (at most computer stores), and easy to install.

Will my cordless phone interfere with my wireless Internet service?

Yes, it can. If you have a cordless phone that is operating at 2.4GHz frequency (the same frequency as your Winters Broadband Internet service), you’ll want to make sure it is operating on a different channel than your Internet service. Check with your Winters Broadband representative to see what channel your service is using, then configure your cordless phone to a channel that is at least three channels away.
